Quote: "I've noticed a belief that somehow optimism lacks intelligence--that optimism must stem from a lack of experience and naïveté. I believe optimism is a choice; cynicism isn't smarter, it's safer. In the press, people are always going to take on someone, and perhaps they'll never get who any of us are. But the fans get it." --Interview magazine, July 1997

Quick Facts: Jewel was born on May 23, 1974 to Atz Kilcher and Lenedra Carroll in Payson, Utah, but the family soon moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Jewel’s name stems from Lenedra, whose middle name is Jewel, and from her Grandfather, Yule (spelled "Juel" in his homeland), a Swiss native who settled in Homer, Alaska in 1940.

She began yodeling at age six as part of her family's folk act.
She Was raised in the backwoods outside Homer, Alaska, in her Swiss grandfather's home--with no shower or television and icy outhouse for a bathroom.
